The Montessori classroom is a multi-aged, child-centered community. Older children can reinforce their skills by sharing with the younger, and the younger can observe and absorb skills from the older. Prince of Peace Montessori has three multi-aged groupings: ages 6 - 9 (Grades 1 - 3), ages 9 - 12 (Grades 4 - 6) and ages 12 - 14 (Grades 7 - 8).
Each Montessori class operates on the principle of freedom within limits, respect for each other and respect for the environment. Materials are presented at each developmental stage designed to assist in a child’s exploration and self-discovery. This encourages the student to be an active learner. Children soon acquire the skills to answer their own questions, to manage freedom with responsibility and to maintain a high level of intellectual curiosity.
The Montessori classrooms at Prince of Peace are communities where each individual is respected and important. The teacher knows the developmental needs of the children and prepares a classroom environment that balances the child’s developing imagination and powers of abstraction with concrete, hands-on materials. Extensive observations and record keeping enable the teacher to plan individual and group presentations. Materials in the academic disciplines (including mathematics, grammar, reading, history, writing, geometry, botany, zoology and geography) enable the child to not only learn skills and concepts, but to experience the inherent beauty and order of each of these disciplines. Religion is taught regularly and spiritual experiences of wonder and awe are nurtured throughout the day.
Students in the Montessori program participate in all of the opportunities offered by Prince of Peace School including physical education, music classes, art classes, library, and Technology, sports, and after-school opportunities. Students participate in and plan weekly masses held at St. John’s Church.
