Catholic Schools Week began in 1974 and is celebrated by Catholic Schools nationwide beginning January 27 and ending February 1.  This year’s theme “Catholic Schools Light the Way” is truly a reflection of our times.  Nationally it is noted that parents are choosing Catholic Schools for the strong values they stress, the good character they emphasize and the compassion they encourage.  Catholic Schools  truly light the way!

Catholic Schools Week celebrates education that goes beyond preparation for a secular life. It is an education that prepares students to live a Christian life in a secular world.  The purpose of Catholic Schools Week is to build community awareness of, and involvement in, Catholic Schools across the country.

Prince of Peace School is joining the national celebration by the many activities and special events of the week.  Here are some of the highlights:

SUNDAY—JANUARY 27

Sunday, we celebrate with our four parishes … Mother of God, Sts. Boniface and James, St. John and St. Ann by thanking the parishioners for their support, prayers, and the many ways they have inspired our students.

Our Open House is the first day of Catholic Schools Week.  Please help us spread the word.  Tell your friends and neighbors to come and see our school. The Open House goes from 1:00-3:00PM.

 MONDAY—JANUARY 28

“Spotlighting our Local Community”

All the students will receive a button imprinted with “Catholic Schools Light the Way” which  they are to wear each day.  The button has a number on the back and each day numbers will be called over the Intercom and students with the corresponding numbers can come to the office to pick a prize.

In the afternoon, all students from every classroom will be with mixed age groups to play board games in one of the classrooms.  Students are asked to bring in board games this Thursday or Friday with their name on the game.

Letters will be written by each class to our community leaders such as Covington Firemen, Police, Mayor, etc.

Light-up Hat Contest — Students may create a hat using the theme of light.  They must be able to wear their hats without holding it on their head. They may wear them on Friday and will be judged on that day.

TUESDAY — JANUARY 29

“Our Volunteers—Beacons of Light”

Students may wear jeans and any shirt that has a Prince of Peace logo on it.  If they wear a basketball jersey, they must wear another shirt with sleeves underneath.

Each class will be doing something special for their volunteers.

In the afternoon, various classes will demonstrate various skills or activities learned in Phys. Ed. Classes.  Also there will be a volleyball game between staff and the Junior High students.

WEDNESDAY — JANUARY 30

“Jesus is our Light at Prince of Peace”

Today, we celebrate our FAITH!  We have a special Mass at St. John’s. You are welcome to join us for that Mass at 8:45.

There is a special Mass at the Cathedral celebrated by Bishop Foys and many of the priests.  Grade 3 and 4 will attend that Mass.

THURSDAY — JANUARY 31

“Flashlights with Energizing Batteries—Our Teachers and Staff”

Today is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day!  The teachers will have Lunch provided by the Parent Association and free of lunch supervision.

Students are encouraged to write a letter to their favorite teacher.

Lights out!  Students may bring in their PJ’s  and change into them in the afternoon and read.

FRIDAY — FEBRUARY 1

“The Stars of Prince of Peace —           our  Students”

Today, we celebrate our students.  The following are the special activities of the day:

· Students may come out of uniform

· Special lunch on this day

· Students will receive a special treat

· In the afternoon we will have the “Parade of Light” hats of all the students who made a hat.

· The whole school will enjoy “The Ned Show” in the afternoon.

Thanks to each of you for all the support you give to all of us at Prince of Peace School.  We celebrate with each of you all the ways we are shining the light of Christ to each other.

Gratefully in the Prince of Peace,

Sister Mary Suzanne
