Dear Parents and Families-

We have had a really great week this week.  We decided that we have celebrated Earth Day to the fullest extent with our compost bin, which is off and running.  The children have been showing their parents and many of the other children throughout the school have been asking about it and taking a look.  The children have also been presenting the information about composting and worm farms to the other classrooms.

We have also been working hard with our study of Australia, including reading and answering questions about Australia.  We have studied birds of Australia and flags.

We also celebrated a special Mass today, as the Superior General for the Sisters of Notre Dame was here from Rome.  She is a native of India and the children were introduced to her as she toured our school after Mass.  Ask your children to share!

Today, we planted vegetable seeds in small jars.  These will be transported to the home of Matthew Obert and his parents, as they have volunteered to plant our seeds and cultivate the vegetables.  We will then be able to harvest them in the fall and see what we grew!  Thank you to the Oberts!

Tomorrow is Secretary’s Day and we are celebrating all day for Virginia.  Virginia loves flowers, so we would like the children to each bring in one flower for her.  Please have your children bring one in from your garden, so there is no extra trip to the florist needed!  We hope to show her our great appreciation for all she does for us!  Thanks!

A few reminders:

• Homework is due tomorrow and spelling tests will be given in the afternoon.

• Remember that the Australia projects (1^st graders – placemat, 2^nd graders – Australian Land Marks, 3^rd graders – Australian Animals) is due May 22, 2008. 

• The third grade field trip is set for May 19, 2008 and we will be taking the children to Big Bone State Park for a day of fun outside!

• With the warm weather upon us, please remember to send your children with a water bottle each week.  They are getting very hot out on the playground!  Also, please make sure to send them with a sweatshirt in case it does not warm up quite enough before recess.

Our volunteers for this week are Terri Rentrop for spelling tests on Thursday and Ketti Obert for homework folders on Friday morning.  Thanks, as always, for the help!
