March 5, 2008

Dear Parents and Families,

This past week has been busy preparing the third graders for their Terra Nova testing and then starting testing.  The first and second graders are doing very well with the third graders out of the room each morning, though they miss their friends!  Sr. Virginia and Ms. Niehaus have been giving us great reports about the third graders.  So, we are having a good week!

We are continuing our study of Famous African Americans, as well as delving further into multiplication.  The children have also received lessons about the poriferan and the preposition.

A few reminders:

  • We DO NOT have spelling tests tomorrow, however homework is still due.

  • We do not have pick-a-stick tomorrow, because of testing.  It will be next Thursday, March 13.

  • We have also included the conference schedule for after Spring Break.  We will have conferences each day of that week we get back, March 31 through April 4.  Conferences are not required this time, so if you do not want one, please check the box and send your paper back.

  • Wesley Schmidt is JoJo in the Holy Cross musical, Seussical, Jr., this weekend.  Claire, Claire and Julia from M2 are in it is, as well.  There are performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, as well as a matinee on Sunday.  Please support our Prince of Peace thespians!

We hope you have had a great.  Thanks, as always, to our volunteers for this week.  This week, we do not need Maggie Green to come in for spelling tests tomorrow, but Christina Howard will be our classroom help on Friday.  Lisa Schmidt will be our technology helper on Tuesday.  Thank you in advance for all of your help!

Have a great week!

Feb. Junior High News PDF Print E-mail
7th and 8th Grade News

February has quickly come to an end!  The students have had many exciting experiences this month.

Students were challenged to read t books in four weeks by the Florence Freedom.  Each book they read they earned a ticket to the ballpark.  Several have 6 and 7 tickets coming to them!

Students had the opportunity to go to the Aronoff and experience the wonderful, inspiring story of Anne Frank.

Several students received "Straight A" tickets to the Cincinnati Reds.

Of course, February also brought many disruptions by way of Mother Nature wilh delays and snow days!  Students have had a hard time staying focused and getting their work finished.

Camp Kern will be coming up at the end of April.  Just a reminder, that this is a privilege not a right.  Students have agreed that they must work and not receive more than 20 "red" cards. This will be strictly enforced!

Students have finished another book and are reading one aloud in class.  Both books have had the background of WWII which we are studying.

March will start by testing the seventh grade with the Terra Nova, an achievement test.

Students are beginning to get ready for their living stations.  Friday before Spring Break will be their presentations in the gym  All are welcome.

Updates:

We have been working on Jazz projects this week.  The students are planning a Jazz fest as a culmination of Bud, Not Buddy.  The story took place during the Great Depression and several characters in the book were in a jazz band.  The students are researching different types of Jazz and Jazz musicians and singers.  They will also be forming their own bands and making posters telling about their band and Jazz Fest.  They are currently working on letters and invitations for the festival and we look forward to parents and grandparents coming in to learn about Jazz and to listen to some wonderful, soulful music.  Your invitations should be coming soon!

M1 Third Grade Testing Letter PDF Print E-mail
Montessori I News

February 27, 2008

Dear Third Grade Parents,

We are beginning to review for the Terra Nova testing that the third grade children will be taking the week of March 3rd.  Wednesday is the one day that they will not have any testing, due to attending Church.  It will end on Monday, March 10th with just one final test on that day.  We have done some practice testing in the classroom and they are becoming more familiar with the format.  We are trying to make it as relaxed as we possibly can.  Please encourage this at home, so the children will not be feeling nervous in the upcoming weeks about the testing.

Their daily work packets in the classroom and their homework will now be some good practice for the tests.  This week’s will be the last practice they will receive.  Please have them fill in the correct bubbles, so they can practice filling them in completely.  Another activity that would help them at home is practice with math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Please ensure that they receive as much sleep as possible.  We would encourage them to have their homework done over the weekend, so that they do not need to worry about it over the week.  We will still have their spelling test on Thursday so we can stick with a little bit of routine.

A nutritious breakfast will help the children to concentrate during the morning.  The children are permitted to have a snack each day during a break in the testing, so please make sure to send them with a healthy snack with their name on the bag or package.  They are also able to have their water bottles with them in the room, so please send them with one so they may fill it as they need it throughout the week.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Beth and Kate
