Prince of Peace Catholic School

History and Purpose of Prince of Peace School

Prince of Peace School (formally St. John School which began in 1854) was established as a combined urban school in 1986 to provide quality Catholic education to our four parishes in urban Covington, Mother of God, St. John, St. Ann and Sts. Boniface and James. Prince of Peace School continues to offer a traditional form of learning as well as teaching the Montessori Method. Both programs work collaboratively to create one school that is diverse in many areas including educational styles. The purpose of our school is to keep quality Catholic education in this economically and spiritually challenged area. We do this in a loving and richly diverse atmosphere, where Jesus’ teachings are the main focus of our day.

History of the Montessori Program

Prince of Peace Montessori opened in the fall of 1999 with one ages 6 - 9 (grades 1-3) classroom, providing Montessori education for children in grades 1, 2, and 3. A team consisting of the Diocese of Covington; Lawrence Bowman, PhD, former Superintendent of Catholic Education; Sister Mary Sharron Goller, former principal of Prince of Peace and a group of dedicated parents, finally realized the dream of providing an exciting alternate education program for all students throughout the Northern Kentucky area.

The next goal was to create a 9-to-12 classroom for levels 4, 5, and 6. In 2000 that goal was realized when the second classroom opened welcoming 6 students in level 4. By the year 2002-2003 a full 9 to 12 classroom was in operation.
The Montessori program is considered a “program within a school” (and not a “school within a school”) and therefore follows all the rules and regulations of Prince of Peace. In addition, the Montessori program relies on the overall services that the school provides – including but not limited to the cafeteria, the gym, the sports teams, the library, the computer room, field trips, the Parents Association, etc.

In August, 2005 we opened the Montessori Junior High with 6 students. We are the only Catholic Montessori Junior High in the Northern Kentucky area.

In the future, we hope to open a Montessori Pre-School Program.

The school operates as part of the Diocese of Covington and is considered one of the ACUE (Alliance for Catholic Urban Education) schools.
